Fire safety at Halloween .5th and 6th classes got an information chat about bonfire and firework safety at Halloween from our community Garda Grace Heffernan. It was an excellent talk with many questions from the boys. There were some hard photos of injuries that can occur from fireworks and bonfires so we ask all our boys to stay safe this HALLOWEEN

Oct 18 – Wellness month

November 6, 2018

October wellness 2018
Each year we try to run a wellness programme for all the boys in the school. This year was another great one with lots of class and whole school activity.
Central to this year was DANCE . The boys from Junior Infants to 5th class really loved the 5 weeks of modern dance with Lisa Hogan of “Dance it Out Ireland”. We finished off the programme by with a performance afternoon in our school hall. The hall was packed , the beats were hopping and the dance moves were unreal . Most pleasing of all was that all boys took part regardless of ability , interest or coolness– they performed with a smile which showed enjoyment of dance and added to their general wellness ! Dance it Out are holding a dance workshop and dance disco for Halloween in the school hall and also are going to run a 6 week after school dance programme for any boys or girls from Birr– See facebook for further details.
Tom Wells of Scholar and warrior studio also did a workshop on karate and self-defence for all classes in October. Tom is running classes each Thursday at 6.30pm in the school hall for any boys who are interested.
Kayak level 1 training course– Our 6th class boys got a fantastic opportunity as they each earned certs from The Irish Kayak Association of Ireland for level 1 kayak skills. The OEC organised through the excellent Yanni and he had the boys out paddling the Shannon and overcoming their fears and anxiety in no time at all. It was great to see the boys excel at this activity and all really enjoyed the outdoors—maybe as a future alternative to FORTNITE!
Our Parents Association also organised a ZEEKO on line safety programme for boys / staff and parents. This programme will be rolled out after mid term in school. Again the school must remind parents that your childs on line internet / social media actions and behaviours are your responsibility and it will have serious consequences for them into the future. The parents who attended the talk found it very informative and a useful tool for them to support their children into the future.
Finally we welcomed FRED THE PARTY PROFESSOR back to the school for a great show of magic and music !

Feb 18: Trip to Glanmore foods in Dublin

March 3, 2018

On 12th February 2018 , 44 lucky boys who had won attendance awards travelled to Blanchardstown in Dublin to get a tour of the Glanmore Foods Factory . Glanmore Foods are our school lunch providers this year and we were delighted to accept their kind offer of a tour. The boys ranged in classes from 1st-6th and either had 100% attendance or were on the winning teams for our attendance awards ( School attendance plan). School attendance promotion is very important at our school and previous rewards have included OEC , tearaways and local pool.
The staff in Glanmore were amazing as they suited the booted all the boys in protective gear and toured the working factory to show them how their lunches are made each day. The boys saw the bread being baked, sandwiches being individually filled to order and fruit being chopped and sorted by the ton ! Each boy was then given a goody bag at the end.
Then it was onwards to the swimming pool in Roscrea for a well-earned dip in the pool and fun—then back to Birr tired and happy. Thanks to Glanmore foods for having us and to Mr Crofton, MsTreacy, Mrs Gorman, Mr Bergin and Mr Carroll for travelling with the group. ( photos on website)

Oct 17 – Dance legends

November 10, 2017

Dance programme—legends– Over October every boy in our school engaged in our wonderful dance project. It was led by the amazing local dance teacher  Ms. Lisa Hogan.  The programme was designed for our school by Lisa and entitled –  legends.

–          Throughout the years, there have been many male icons in the music industry. Leaving the world in remembrance of their signature dance moves and performances. This in turn has given young boys and men figures to idolise and encourage the art of music and dance. With this in mind we have designed a programme under the theme of “Legends” inspired by Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley and the likes. This programme will create a fun, welcoming and empowering environment for the boys of St. Brendan’s PS where they can explore the history, creation and performance of dance and these icons.

Not only will we be keeping the work of these legends alive and educating the children on their legacy, we strongly believe that dance with these well known and loved moves will heighten a child’s confidence and self-esteem as well as awareness in the body both physically and emotionally. As most children will be aware of the signature moves, it will be easier for them to engage with and master, thus leaving them with more confidence.

The boys really loved the 5 weeks of modern dance with Lisa. We finished off the programme by recording some of the dances on video and we hope to share them with the boys and families in November. The programme was supported by Offaly County Council Arts office and celebrated the arts in our school.dance it out

January 2016- 6th class debating team

January 13, 2017

Arguments are flying around in 6th class as Mr Cunningham prepares his team for the next round of the midland schools debating competition. The team under captain Damien Delaney have already had two great debates with Oxmantown NS and St . Cronans NS Roscrea which they narrowly won. Thanks to Mr John McArdle who officiates are independent judge. All involved in the school teams should take great pride in the high standard and no doubt we are witnessing future politicians in action ! ( Pictured St Brendans PS V Oxmantown NS)100_8480
