Every year at the end of each term our school holds a junior and senior Table Quiz. These quizes are a fun way to learn and show off what the pupils know. One of our quizes this year was in Irish and the boys really enjoyed this experience.

Our u/11 Credit Union Quiz Team did very well this year. They won at local level and then went on to the next stage and finished 2nd at Chapter level. This qualified them to go to the All Ireland in the R.D.S. in Dublin where they finished 6th overall.

This year again our pupils had the opportunity to share the experiences of two authors. Mary Arrigan visited Birr Library and our pupils went to hear her read some of her works and availed of a workshop afterwards. Writer Tony Hickey visited the school and gave workshops in various classes. We hope that these experiences will inspire the creative talents and imagination of our pupils.

As part of their farewell preparations 6th class participated in a Public Speaking Presentation. Their topics of choice were based on project work on the theme of “My Hero”. There was a great turnout of parents for the event and everyone was very impressed with the clarity, diction, knowledge of the subject and confidence with which the presentation was given.

This year as part of the Operatic Theatre Company’s outreach programme our 4th class performed in the children’s opera production of Bug Off. This project covered many areas of the curriculum including music, drama and visual arts. The pupils enjoyed the rehersals and in the company of local baritone John Molloy they gave two wonderful performances in the Oxmantown Theatre.

The theme for the end of year Mass was I am Growing. The pupils read prayers, brought gifts, sang hymns and played instruments all adding to the lovely ceremony presided over by Fr. Cahir. There was a great turn out of parents on the day and the gym was decorated beautifully with art work from all the classes on the theme of growing.

A speaker gave a talk to the pupils about looking after the environment and recycling in general. This was followed by the arrival of a large Environmental Bin and the pupils were asked to bring in small electrical items for recycling purposes. There was a great response and the project was a great success.

Congratulations to Jack Cleary from sixth class who won this years Student of the Year award. Jack was presented with the Derek Maher Perpetual Trophy at an awards ceremony in the school.

This year again we ran both our junior and senior hurling leagues. These leagues have been a tradition in the school for many years with the emphasis being put on participation and enjoyment. There was a great turnout of players and both teachers and pupils gave up their lunch time breaks to play and organise these games. This year the junior league final was contested by Niall Hehir’s team and Ben Russell’s team with Niall’s team being the eventual winners. Niall Hehir was presented with the St. Brendan’s Cup at an awards ceremony in the school. The senior league final saw Patrick Kelly’s team against Ryan O Meara’s with Patrick just shading it on the day. Patrick was presented with the Kenneth Fox Perpetual Trophy at the awards ceremony in the school. Well done to all the lads. Congratulations to Stefan Feehan who won this years Hurler of the Year award. He was presented with the Aidan Rosney Perpetual Trophy at an awards ceremony in the school.
